Conn is deputy provost; Wharton, Law get interim deans
- Peter J. Conn, Ph.D., the Andrea Mitchell Professor of English, was named Deputy Provost in July. In that position, Conn serves as chief advisor to the Provost, overseeing undergraduate education. Conn will also assume responsibility for graduate education in the wake of last weeks announcement that Janice Madden, Ph.D., would step down as Vice Provost for Graduate Education. A recipient of John Simon Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, Conn has earned awards for distinguished teaching and is the author of several books, most recently Pearl S. Buck: A Cultural Biography.
- Patrick Harker, Ph.D., recently appointed Deputy Dean of the Wharton School was appointed in August to serve as Interim Dean of the Wharton School. Harker, who is also the UPS Transportation Professor for the Private Sector and Professor of Operations and Information Management and Systems Engineering, is a recipient of the Wharton Schools David W. Hauck Award for Outstanding Teaching.
- Charles W. Mooney Jr., J.D., has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the Law School, where he was serving as Associate Dean. A legal scholar with experience as a corporate lawyer, Mooney has chaired the schools Educational Programs and Graduate Studies Committees, and has served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.

ICA names new director
- Claudia Gould has been named Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, effective Sept. 7. Most recently the executive director of New Yorks Artists Space, Gould eliminated that organizations debt, built endowment, developed new project spaces and established grants to artists. As Director of ICA, Gould will be responsible for determining the museums artistic direction and supervising operations. Gould has a B.A. in Art History from Boston College and an M.A. in Museum Studies from New York University.
- Amy A. Bosio (C83,WG89) was appointed Interim Treasurer for the University, effective July 1. She previously served as Associate Treasurer. She was responsible for Cash Management, Trust Administration, Construction Finance and Real Estate, and Central Gifts Processing.
- Wendy S. White (L75) will fill the position of Deputy General Counsel for the University, effective Sept. 20. Most recently a partner in the Washington, D.C., firm Shea & Gardner, White worked in the White House Counsels office from 1996 to 1997, focusing on various congressional investigations; immigration, labor, and education matters; campaign finance reform legislation; Hatch Act inquiries; and ethics issues.
Trustee resolutions
The Trustees of the University appoved the following resolutions at their June 18 meeting:
- Sheldon Hackney, Ph.D., Professor of History, was designated President Emeritus.
- P. Roy Vagelos, M.D., who stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, was elected an Emeritus Trustee.
