Before this summer, Shaan Kewalramani, an incoming freshman at Texas A&M University at College Station, did not dwell on the fact that people with concealed-carry licenses would be able to bring their weapons into classrooms and dormitories at his new home in the fall. Then he noticed a thread in a Facebook group for new students. “What’s everyone’s view on gun control?" the post asked. In the comments, Mr. Kewalramani added his own simple insight: "No guns," he wrote, earning a handful of likes.

The United States is producing more research scientists than academia can handle. We have been told time and again that the United States needs more scientists, but when it comes to some of the most desirable science jobs — tenure-track professorships at universities, where much of the exciting work is done — there is such a surplus of Ph.D.s that in the most popular fields, like biomedicine, fewer than one in six has a chance of joining the club in the foreseeable future. While they try to get a foot in the door, many spend years after getting their Ph.D.

College students who take out federal loans are required to receive counseling when they receive the loan and before they enter repayment, but not in between -- a source of frustration for financial aid administrators who say they are not able to advise students on whether they are overborrowing or will be able to pay back a loan in a timely manner. The Obama administration signaled this week that it was developing a plan to allow some colleges and universities to require additional loan counseling of student borrowers on their campuses.
