In November, the University of Kentucky announced that it was covering up a controversial Depression-era mural that has been criticized for years by black students and faculty members for its depiction of slavery. Eli Capilouto, the university's president, released and essay at the time in which he wrote about being moved by the pain black students told him the mural creates for them.

As sexual violence on college campuses has attracted more attention in recent years, discussion has often turned to bystander intervention, the practice of intervening in a situation when another person needs help. At a U.S. Senate education committee hearing Wednesday, bystander intervention got a boost as a possible solution to not only sexual violence, but also harassment and bullying. Several senators and witnesses raised concerns that colleges are not doing enough to prevent harassment and bullying.
