Expectations Mount for Trustees in Higher Education
Rick White is a financial consultant in Boulder, Colo., but his heart is often 2,000 miles to the east, at Haverford College, the school on the Main Line outside Philadelphia that he graduated from in 1981. When he was tapped to be on its governing board, he was like a sub coming off the bench in a crucial game, ready to go all in. “I had been active in alumni things, so someone asked me to serve,” said Mr. White, the board’s chairman. “The Quaker values at Haverford are important, but there is also a need to have people around who know finance. I was a twofer, and I like to think it has turned out well for all concerned.”
