- Two Penn poets—Kelly Writers House Acting Director Teresa Leo and former English graduate student Mytili Jagannathan (G’00)—are recipients of the $50,000 Pew Fellowship in the Arts for 2002. The fellowship will allow the two to focus on their art without the worry of full-time jobs. Sample their poetry at ccat.sas .upenn.edu/xconnect.

- The Pennsylvania Gazette, the University’s alumni magazine, walked away with two medals in the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education’s annual awards programs. The magazine received a gold for visual design in print and a silver for periodical staff writing. CASE is the organization for alumni relations, communications and development professionals in educational institutions.

- Newell Fischer, clinical professor in Psychiatry at the School of Medicine has been elected president of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). A member of APsaA for over 40 years, Fischer has worked towards educating the public about the value of psychoanalytic thinking as it applies to the overall health of an individual.

NIH recognition

- Dwight L. Evans, chair of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, has been named a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institutes of Mental Health. In this role, Evans will review and assess the quality of laboratory and clinical studies conducted by the NIH’s Intramural Research Program. He will also assess the progress of each project’s lead investigator and make recommendation regarding the allocation of federal research funds.

- Madeleine M. Joullié, professor of chemistry, has been appointed a member of the Center for Scientific Review’s Medicinal Chemistry Study Section. As a member, Joullié will review grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health, make recommendations on these applications to the NIH national advisory board and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
