Penn-in-Harrisburg I: There’s another bigwig in the Rendell administration with a Penn connection: Secretary of Conservation and Natural Resources Mike DiBerardinis. The longtime community activist had served as recreation commissioner in the administration of Mayor Rendell. This fall, he was named executive director of the Campaign for Working Families, a project housed in Penn’s Center for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society designed to help low-income families take advantage of state and federal programs that assist the working poor.

Penn-in-Harrisburg II: Gov. Rendell not only relied on Penn expertise to staff his cabinet, he also picked three Penn people to help him fill his administration and tackle thorny issues as members of his transition teams. Robert P. Inman, Miller-Sherrerd Professor of Finance at the Wharton School, was named to the Budget Crisis Task Force. Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine Alan M. Kelly sat on the agriculture transition team, and Chief of Staff to President Rodin Pedro Ramos served on the Education Transition Team.

A pioneer heads west: Maureen Kelly, associate director of special services for the University Police Department, has accepted the position of director of safety and security at Franklin and Marshall College. She assumes her new position Feb. 10. Kelly was one of the first women to graduate from the Philadelphia Police Academy in 1976, and served as part of an international policing task force in Bosnia between her jobs with Philadelphia and Penn police. Have fun learning for less: See something in this semester’s Special Programs catalog that looks like fun? Think you’d like to take it? It won’t cost you as much as it used to, starting this semester, because the alumni discount offered by the College of General Studies has been extended to staff. The discount is being extended by popular demand, according to Nadia Daniels, director of special programs in CGS. “[Since] the tuition reimbursement is not available for these courses, we thought that it would be a good idea” to extend the discount, she said.
