Notes on a new camp: There’s a new addition to the wide array of summer camps on campus this year. PennKids, a day camp from the Department of Recreation, offers education, games and fun, plus swimming every day, for first through sixth graders. Each of the six one-week sessions, from June 23 to Aug. 1, is organized around a theme, such as animals, world cultures, creativity, water and the Olympics. Hot lunches are included as well, and early and late extended hours are also available. Sound interesting? Hoops tix cheap: As discounts go, this one’s a slam dunk—your chance to catch Quaker men’s basketball action for $3 a ticket. That’s all it will cost you, your family and your friends to see this Saturday’s Penn-Brown matchup at the Palestra, thanks to a special discount from the Division of Human Resources and the Athletic Department. All Penn faculty and staff are eligible for the discount; season ticket holders may purchase additional discounted tickets for family and friends—Athletics will make every effort to seat them near you. Cross it off your calendars: The Penn Presents PR people have informed us that their scheduled production of Anne Nelson’s play “The Guys,” which we featured in our Jan. 16 report on the arts, has been canceled. The reason? A movie version of the play, starring Sigourney Weaver, is set to open in local theaters in March, when the play was to run. If you have already purchased tickets, you may exchange them for another Penn Presents event or request a refund by calling 215-898-3900.

Sunset for a scientist: Vice Pro-vost for Research Neal Nathanson has announced that he is retiring effective July 1. By his own count, this is the fourth retirement for the emeritus professor of microbiology, who was on the Johns Hopkins faculty before coming to the School of Medicine. He left Penn to become director of AIDS research at the National Institutes of Health in 1998, and returned to Penn to assume his current post in 2000. He will return to his emeritus faculty post upon his retirement as vice provost.

Avoid the crowds: Want to see “Degas and the Dance” without having to crane your neck? The Penn Club of Philadelphia invites you to join its members for a special private viewing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art this Saturday, Feb. 15, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Museum docents will be on hand to discuss Degas’ life and works on display, and a buffet dinner is included.
