JoAnn McCarthy is the new face of Penn’s international relations, as of March 1. McCarthy has been appointed Assistant Provost for International Affairs, and will work to develop and implement Penn’s global strategy, oversee initiatives to increase visibility in the international arena and encourage and promote international activities through the University, among other duties.

McCarthy, who received her Ph.D. from Florida State University in foreign language education, comes to Penn from the University of South Florida, where she worked as Dean of International Affairs since 1999. There, McCarthy oversaw a variety of programs, including Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Center for Africa and the Diaspora and study abroad programs.

Medha Narvekar has been named Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. Narvekar assumes the position after serving for more than two years as Interim Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. On announcing her new role, President Amy Gutmann commended Narvekar for “her leadership, creativity and collaborative spirit.”

Ralph Maier has been promoted to director of Purchasing Services. Since 1990, Maier served as assistant director of the department. He will now lead all internal and external business processes to facilitate Penn’s almost $700 million in annual purchases.

William Schilling, Penn’s director of student financial aid, was recently inducted into the Colllege Scholarship Service (CSS) Hall of Fame. Schilling was honored for his “significant and lasting contributions to the principles of access and equity for all students that underpin both the CSS and College Board mission to connect students to college success and opportunity.”
