  • A Penn GSE collaboration creates a mural and a hands-on learning experience

    Philadelphia artist Symone Salib created the 13x14-foot mural in partnership with faculty at Central Montco Technical High School (CMTHS) faculty, the CMTHS Student Equity Crew, which is a group of students that work to promote equity and inclusion in the school's community, and the Penn Consortium for Mental Health and Optimal Development at Penn GSE.

  • Jonathan Zimmerman wins the 34th annual IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award

    The Penn GSE professor’s book, “Free Speech and Why You Should Give a Damn,” co-written with editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson, has been honored with a gold prize in the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award program’s “Political & Current Events” category.

  • Creating an equitable pathway for Philadelphia’s aspiring school principals

    Penn GSE, the School District of Philadelphia, and Temple University are launching a new leadership program designed to prepare School District of Philadelphia employees to become school principals and education leaders. The Pathway to Leadership Principal Preparation Program will begin with the first cohort of students in summer 2022.

  • New Penn GSE scholarship to open doors to future teachers and leaders

    Through the Penn GSE Empowerment Through Education Scholarship Program, Penn GSE will provide significant funding for several students in the Mid-Career Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership and the Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program each year, awarding the scholarship to individuals who would not otherwise be able to consider enrolling in those programs.

  • Dean Grossman elected VP of National Academy of Education

    Penn GSE Dean Pam Grossman was recently named Vice President of the National Academy of Education, an organization dedicated to advancing high-quality education research and evidence-based policy. Additionally, two Penn GSE Professors—Howard Stevenson and Nancy Hornberger—were inducted into the Academy in November.

  • Winners announced for 2021 Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition

    Readlee, a platform that uses artificial intelligence to improve academic outcomes by listening to students read, won the grand prize at the 12th anniversary Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition. HomeWorks Trenton, a community-based, after-school residential program that provides academic and social-emotional enrichment activities while empowering marginalized high school girls in their community, won the American Public University System Prize.

  • Regular bedtimes reduce absenteeism for kindergarteners, study finds

    Michael Gottfried, a professor in the Educational Policy division at Penn GSE and J. Jacob Kirkse’s article, “Going to sleep and going to school: Linking bedtime to student absenteeism” sets out to explore three primary questions: whether a regular bedtime links to better attendance, whether the hour of bedtime matters, and whether school start time links to better attendance.
