  • Law faculty caution against drawing ‘broad societal implications’ from Rittenhouse acquittal

    Kimberly Kessler Ferzan, the Earle Hepburn Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy, says “it is difficult not to draw broad societal implications from this verdict. But I think we should be careful here. Wisconsin law had very narrow self-defense inquiries, and the question of whether the jurors appropriately made those calls is a distinct question from what the law should be. This is all the more difficult because the state had to disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt, and that standard is a high one.”

  • Quattrone Center releases analysis of police response at George Floyd protests

    The Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice completed a Sentinel Event Review conducted by community stakeholders and representatives of the Madison Police Department (MPD) reviewing MPD’s responses to protests in the summer of 2020, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, with 69 recommendations designed to improve MPD’s response to future protests and provide support for the First Amendment freedoms of the community in atmospheres of physical and emotional safety.

  • Law School supports nine First Generation Professionals Fellows across all class years

    For the first time since the Law School’s Center on Professionalism initiated its First Generation Professionals Fellowship (FGP), each of the three JD classes in the Law School includes a cohort of FGP Fellows. Though the initial intention was to support six Fellows, the FGP Fellowship currently supports nine outstanding First Generation JD students.

  • University of Pennsylvania Carey Law students represent the United States as virtual delegates in conference on same sex marriage laws around the world

    This spring, six Penn Law students joined students from law schools around the world to participate in a weeklong virtual workshop t hosted by Waseda Law School in Tokyo, title “Same Sex Marriage: Comparative Legal Issues.”

  • University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School establishes the Morgan Lewis Impact Fund for Racial Justice

    The $250,000 fund will provide financial support to racial justice and anti-racism efforts at the Law School, expanding initiatives to advance racial justice in the classroom, in the community, and in the profession.

  • University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and Troutman Pepper partner to address dearth of immigration lawyers

    For the past three years, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School students at the Toll Public Interest Center have have partnered with Troutman Pepper’s Pepper Center for Public Service to perform pro bono immigration work and address the scarcity of immigration lawyers currently in practice across the U.S. The pro bono immigration work encompasses all facets of the immigration process, from court proceedings to dealings with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and various social service agencies.

  • University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School establishes the Cozen Family Voting Rights Fellowship

    With the support of a multiyear gift from Steve and Sandy Cozen, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School has launched the Cozen Family Voting Rights Fellowship, which will provide two years of funding for a graduate working to advance and protect voting rights.

  • Joelle Hageboutros joins ICJ Judicial Fellows Programme

    The Wharton senior will join the International Court of Justice Judicial Fellows Programme for 2021-2022. The competitive, highly selective program was established to provide recent law graduates the opportunity to gain experience working as a clerk at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

  • Examining the legal implications of COVID-19 on the Latinx community

    The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School’s Latinx Law Students Association held its 24th annual conference, “Fighting an Uphill Battle: Examining the Legal Implications of COVID-19 on the Latinx Community,” on April 3. The two panels featured advocates from law, government, and medicine, with the goal of highlighting the disparate impact COVID-19 has on Latinx communities.

  • The anniversary of COVID-19 and the growing importance of allyship

    In fall 2020, Senior Adjunct Professor of Global Leadership Rangita de Silva de Alwis’ “Women, Law, and Leadership” course at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School interviewed over 65 male law students and 40 legal and business leaders to ask about gender bias and allyship in the workplace. Over 89% of interviewees talked about how implicit, systemic, and structural biases exist, and most of these interviewees also discussed potential ideas for how to counter these kinds of subtle bias in the workplace.
