  • Historian Mia Bay wins Bancroft Prize

    Mia Bay, Roy F. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of American History, won this year’s Bancroft Prize for her book, “Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance.” The prize is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the field of American history.

  • Ryan Hynd named the recipient of the 2022-2023 AMS Claytor-Gilmer Fellowship

    The award recognizes Hynd’s deep research in partial differential equations and will support a yearlong research visit to the Mittag-Lefler Institute where he will investigate the Blaschke-Lebesgue problem.

  • Layla Murphy receives Secretary of State Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad

    The award recognizes Murphy’s work in the UAE during her gap semester. She shares the award with Sari Heidenreich, Director of Programs–Oman and Kuwait for Do Bold, a human rights organization. Together they supported the repatriation of Sierra Leonean domestic workers who had been trafficked to and/or exploited in Oman.

    The School of Arts & Sciences has announced the establishment of a new Data Driven Discovery Initiative, a hub for data science education and research across the School. Bhuvnesh Jain and Greg Ridgeway are serving as the initiative’s inaugural co-directors.

    Mind DivE In (Diversity and Equity Initiative in the Mind Sciences) drew undergraduate students from institutions across the country for a weekend of in-person workshops and mentoring from faculty including Angela Duckworth.

  • Rebecca Kamen exhibits work at UNESCO’s ‘Creative Resilience’ exhibition in Paris

    The visiting scholar and Penn Artist in Residence was selected to exhibit her work at the “Creative Resilience: Art by Women in Science” exhibition sponsored by UNESCO at their headquarters in Paris.

  • Mary Frances Berry, winner of the 2021 Lewis Award for History and Social Justice

    Established in 2021 by the American Historical Association, the prize is offered annually to recognize a historian for leadership and sustained engagement at the intersection of historical work, public culture, and social justice. Berry is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and Professor of History Emerita.

  • Angela Gibney and Daniel Krashen named Presidential Professors of Mathematics

    Gibney is an algebraic geometer who has obtained deep results about moduli spaces of complex curves and vertex operator algebras, and Krashen’s research in algebra and arithmetic geometry includes the study of division algebras, quadratic forms, local-global principles, moduli stacks, and derived categories. The Presidential Professorships are five-year term chairs, awarded by Penn President Amy Gutmann to outstanding scholars.

  • Penn Arts & Sciences announces Making a Difference in Global Communities and Klein Family Social Justice Grants

    Making a Difference in Global Communities supports multidisciplinary projects led by Arts & Sciences faculty working with students to address global societal challenges, including inequities in race, gender, sexual identity, socioeconomic mobility, education, health care, and political representation, as well as climate change, poverty, and immigration. The Klein Grants are a new program committed to the achievement of social justice through research, teaching, and community engagement.
