    Joan I. Gluch, chief of Penn Dental Medicine’s Division of Community Oral Health, has been honored by the Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) for her public service to the community as the 2021 recipient of the PDA Public Service Award. The award recognizes her commitment to underserved communities through her insightful innovations to improve their oral health.

  • Miriam Robbins receives American Academy of Oral Medicine’s highest award

    The professor of clinical oral medicine and restorative dentistry, and director of the School’s Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, has been recognized by the American Academy of Oral Medicine at this year’s recipient of its Craig S. Miller Diamond Pin Award. The Academy’s highest honor, the Award is presented for exceptional and dedicated service to the Academy.

  • Three Penn Dental students accept national leadership roles in ASDA

    This year, Penn Dental Medicine represents three of the four students appointed to serve on National American Student Dental Association. Second-year student Ryan Kaminsky was elected District 3 Trustee on the Board of Trustees. Julie Berenblum was appointed Council on Membership Associate, and first-year student Hilary Wong was appointed Council on Communications Associate.

  • Delta Dental Foundation funds professional development series on serving persons with disabilities

    With the goal of helping to improve access to dental care for individuals with disabilities, Penn Dental Medicine will be establishing a new continuing education series through the support of the Delta Dental Foundation. The gift will fund an online professional development program designed to help oral health professionals better understand and care for the disabilities community.

  • How diet may alter risk of periodontal disease

    In a new study in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Penn Dental Medicine researcher find that overall some categories of foods—nuts, red meat, and trans-fatty acids—may be associated with periodontal disease. In specific, nuts may be protective, while red meat and trans-fatty acids might increase your risk for periodontal disease.

  • Research grant programs to advance innovation in oral and craniofacial health

    Two new research grant programs have been launched in partnership with the Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry to help advance innovative breakthroughs in dental medicine, with Penn Health-Tech and the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation incorporating these funding opportunities into their annual call for proposals for medical devices and health technology development projects.

  • Interdisciplinary team studying possible therapeutic pathways to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection

    The study, led by principal investigator Bruce Shenker, was awarded funding as part of a National Institutes of Health program to support supplemental COVID-19-related research, receiving a one-year grant extension to Shenker’s grant titled “Bacteria and lymphocyte suppression in periodontitis.”
