  • Ph.D. Architecture Students attend summer International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures 2023

    Weitzman School of Design professor Masoud Akbarzadeh and Ph.D. architecture students Yao Lu, Hua Chai, Teng Teng, and Yefan Zhi from the Polyhedral Structures Laboratory presented a total of six research papers at the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures 2023 in Melbourne Australia in July.

  • Weitzman faculty, staff, and alums at United Nations Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya

    The international convening of the highest decision-making body on sustainable urbanization and human settlements in the world, convened from June 5-9 in Nairobi, Kenya. Eugenie L. Birch, Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research and Education at Weitzman and co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research gave input on 10 resolutions that were ultimately approved by the UNHA.

  • Richard Weller honored with Landscape Architecture Foundation legacy award

    Richard Weller, professor of landscape architecture and co-executive director of The Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism & Ecology at the Weitzman School of Design, was presented with the inaugural LAF Legacy Award at the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s June 14 annual awards event. The LAF Legacy Award was created in 2023 by the LAF to recognize past members of the LAF Board of Directors who provided extraordinary service and contributions to the organization and its legacy.

  • Riddhi Batra and Alex Cartwright win Poster Awards at the CM2 Summer Forum

    Cartwright received the Most Impactful Planning Project Award for his project, Cherry Island Wetland Park. Batra received the Most Innovative Research Project Award for her project, A Manifesto for Place. Both are students in Dean Steiner and Rebecca Popowsky's Megaregions Studio.

  • Bridging the analog and digital in ancient Cappadocia

    Ferda Kolatan, associate professor of architecture at the Weitzman School, started a new three-part studio at Weitzman dedicated to investigating how the material, cultural, and historical circumstance of Cappadocia, one of the Anatolian regions in the center of modern-day Turkey, can yield new architectural prototypes for cities today.

  • Weitzman Students win second place in EPA Environmental Justice Video Challenge

    Aminah McNulty, Jackson Plumlee, Allison Nkwocha, and Drexel University student Nina Valentine, with the Eastwick United Community Development Corporation, created a strategy proposal and video, “Making Eastwick Whole,” which addresses the economic, social, and environmental needs of Philadelphia’s Eastwick neighborhood.

  • Cindy Sanders on design leadership

    Cindy Sanders, president and CEO of OLIN and an adjunct professor of landscape architecture also teaches in the Weitzman School’s new Executive Program in Design Leadership. She discusses the shift in the culture of leadership from a transactional approach—one that is rooted in power dynamics and whose primary consideration is the bottom line and profitability at all costs.

  • Michael Fichman receives City of Philadelphia Creative Economy Citizens Award

    The lecturer in the Department of City & Regional Planning and research associate with PennPraxis was awarded the Citizens Award during the inaugural forum for the Creative Economy and Arts in Education Month event last month. At Weitzman, Fichman is a lecturer in the Master of Urban Spatial Analytics program, as well as a DJ, producer, and chair of Nightlife of the Arts and Culture Task Force in Philadelphia, and the founder of 24HrPHL.

  • Weitzman MCP candidates win first and second-place prizes at Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Competition

    This year’s student competition, “Designing For an Equitable Future in Chinatown,” asked students to elevate and prioritize low-income communities of Chinatown and leverage open space to facilitate equitable development and neighborhood preservation. The first prize was awarded to Qianyun Wei, Chris Xu, and Marcus Owens, and the second prize was awarded to Hongyi Li, Jingyi Cai, and Shuting Li.
