  • Michael Fichman receives City of Philadelphia Creative Economy Citizens Award

    The lecturer in the Department of City & Regional Planning and research associate with PennPraxis was awarded the Citizens Award during the inaugural forum for the Creative Economy and Arts in Education Month event last month. At Weitzman, Fichman is a lecturer in the Master of Urban Spatial Analytics program, as well as a DJ, producer, and chair of Nightlife of the Arts and Culture Task Force in Philadelphia, and the founder of 24HrPHL.

  • ‘Art @ SP2’ exhibit affirms diversity, belonging, and community in renovated lobby

    The works of art produced by 15 students, faculty, and staff were the result of an initiative established by SP2’s Task Force on Race and Social Justice and carried out by the Art Committee at SP2 to install art in the physical spaces that reflects, recognizes, and affirms the diversity of the School’s students, faculty, and staff.

  • Weitzman MCP candidates win first and second-place prizes at Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Competition

    This year’s student competition, “Designing For an Equitable Future in Chinatown,” asked students to elevate and prioritize low-income communities of Chinatown and leverage open space to facilitate equitable development and neighborhood preservation. The first prize was awarded to Qianyun Wei, Chris Xu, and Marcus Owens, and the second prize was awarded to Hongyi Li, Jingyi Cai, and Shuting Li.

  • Juan Llamas-Rodriguez and Julia Ticona named Institute for Advanced Study School of Social Science fellows

    The Annenberg professors are two of the 22 scholars selected worldwide from fields including communication, political science, anthropology, law, sociology, English, science and technology, and more to be in residence for the 2023-24 academic year.

  • Celebrating 50 volumes in Penn IUR—Penn Press book series

    March marks he publication of the 50th book in Penn IUR’s series with Penn Press.The 50 volumes cover a wide array of topics and cities, from informal politics in Accra to the role of immigration in revitalizing American cities to several edited volumes on urban issues of global importance, such as affordable housing, informality, downtown development, and climate adaptation.

  • CELA 2023 awardees announced

    Three members of the Weitzman community have been recognized by The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) with 2023 Faculty Awards. Sonja Dümpelmann, professor and acting chair of landscape architecture, is the recipient of the 2023 CELA Award for Excellence in Research and/or Creative Work. LA+, the interdisciplinary journal of landscape architecture based at Weitzman, is the recipient of the 2023 CELA Excellence in Communications Award.

  • Kathleen Hall Jamieson elected to AAAS board of directors

    The director of Penn’s Annenberg Public Policy Center and the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the university’s Annenberg School for Communication, has been elected to a four-year term on the board of directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  • SP2 Social Justice Scholar Skye Holbrook works to effect change through data

    A master’s student and inaugural Social Justice Scholar at Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice, Horbrook has contributed research to the national conversation about the significance of historically Black colleges and universities. Now she is exploring the intersection of data and equity through an internship placement as she prepares to graduate.
