  • Children’s literature in the Joanna Banks Collection

    Of the 10,000 works in the Joanna Banks Collection of African American Books, at least 1,000 are identified as publications for children. Joanna Banks is a regular person who collected books for years as a hobby; she just saw books by Black authors, books featuring Black children, and many other types of media like cookbooks, and bought as many as she could, starting in the mid-1960s. This collection represents books that were available to the average person at the time.

  • A culture of inclusion at Penn Medicine during LGBTQ+ Pride month and all year long

    At this year’s 2023 Philadelphia LGBTQ+ Pride march, staff from across the University of Pennsylvania Health System, along with their friends, families, and neighbors—nearly 30 people in all—participated to celebrate the Philadelphia LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm Penn Medicine’s commitment to health equity, representation, and support for queer individuals who are employed by or receive care across the Health System.

  • An update to the Penn community on Tomorrow, Together from President Magill

    Last October, Penn President Liz Magill charged the Red and Blue Advisory Committee of faculty, staff, and student leaders to hear from all corners of our Penn community; to be forward-looking and bold; and to consider where we, together, might take Penn. The Committee members, led by Provost John L. Jackson, Jr., collated and condensed all they heard from our Penn community and recently reported their findings to the President.

  • Preservation Alliance Awards for three Penn projects

    Three Penn construction projects have been awarded 2023 Grand Jury Awards from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia: the Burk-Bergman Boathouse renovation and addition, repairs to the David Goddard Research Laboratories (Goddard), and the renovation of historic Kelly Writer's House.

  • Diversity in the Stacks: The Open Access Pilot for Latin American Monographs

    This project provides universal free access to over 300 scholarly monographs published by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences. The pilot began by prioritizing the front list of newly published titles—CLACSO publishes approximately 100 books per year. Its third year will expand the publication, discoverability, and digital preservation of new titles.
