  • Diversity in the Stacks: Highlights from the Penn Sexuality Collection

    This year, the Penn Libraries launched the Penn Sexuality Collection, a new effort that builds upon our already existing collections in more traditional aspects of sexuality studies. The Penn Libraries is already home to the Banned Books Collections, which is made up of pulp fiction of a sexual nature that was popular for about 40 years after World War II.

  • Kathleen Shields Anderson: Vice president of Public Safety

    Shields Anderson joined Penn in 2012 as executive director of operations and chief of staff, and has been appointed vice president of Public Safety effective June 1.

  • Diversity in the Stacks: North African books in French

    The Libraries has acquired French language novels, and works on politics, Islam, art, and culture. Their publication in French reflects transnational networks of scholarly communication. A full picture of North African history and culture must take into account its multilingual reality. Collecting to support teaching and research can present a challenge, as materials in French and in Arabic are often artificially separated.

  • Exploring the meanings of ‘home’: Children’s lit recommendations from the Penn Libraries Community Engagement team

    To celebrate the end of the semester, the Penn Libraries Community Engagement team invited Penn students from the Community Engagement team to tell us about books that feel like “home” to them. Some choices are from the Mirrors Collection, some are books students cherished in childhood, and all embody a careful and nuanced understanding of home for each student.

  • Penn announces construction start on Central PA solar facilities

    The Power Purchase Agreement calls for construction in central Pennsylvania of two new solar energy facilities with combined capacity of 220 megawatts, moving the University closer to meeting its commitment of a 100% carbon neutral campus by 2042, as outlined in Penn’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan.

  • May Featured Books and DVDs: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 

    The AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) umbrella term encompasses cultures from all of Asia, as well as the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. The Penn Libraries’ recommendations for books and DVDs to celebrate AAPI heritage reflect the diversity of populations comprised in this group.

    Each year, the University honors student leaders who are graduating with two awards: President & Provost’s Honor for Developing New Initiatives in Graduate & Professional Student Life and the Dr. Andy Binns Award for Outstanding Service to Graduate and Professional Student Life.

  • Diversity in the Stacks: Folk and tribal arts in South Asia

    Penn Libraries have aimed to acquire more materials related to South Asian folk and tribal traditions, with particular interest in arts and performance. Additional funding last year allowed for a directed purchase of several hundred volumes related to South Asian painting, textiles, music, and dance.
