  • Penn’s First COVID-19 lung transplant patient recovered to celebrate his triplets’ graduation

    In October, Fred Rahmanian, a 54-year-old husband and father of teenage triplets, tested positive for COVID-19. Late on November 11 he rapidly became so sick that doctors deemed him too unstable to even transport to a tertiary center for more advanced care, and his local hospital called for assistance from Penn’s Lung Rescue Mobile ECMO team, kicking off a long chain of Penn Medicine care that would see Rahmanian through to a remarkable recovery.

    Rachel Farmer, a unit clerk in Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital’s Trauma Neurosurgical Unit, fights on the front lines of COVID-19. Often called “Reverend Rachel” by her colleagues, Farmer aims to bring comfort and levity to an incredibly stressful time for patients, their families, and her colleagues.

  • Penn Nursing is battling public health misinformation online

    In a novel effort to combat COVID-19 misinformation, a group of women researchers, including nurse scientists from the School of Nursing, launched the Dear Pandemic social media campaign in March 2020 to deliver comprehensive and timely information about the COVID-19 pandemic in a question-and-answer format.

  • Urgent care centers: Lower-cost than emergency departments, but they increase spending

    A new study in Health Affairs shows the average urgent care center (UCC) visit cost only $171 compared to $1,646 for a visit to an emergency department. However, the relative convenience of UCCs results in increased numbers of visits, which increases overall spending.

  • Making Black lives matter in Philadelphia: Perspectives from the health sciences

    The first talk in a new lecture series featured a keynote address by Eugenia South, who addressed how the COVID-19 pandemic has hit many Black communities the hardest, how the initial vaccine roll-out has disproportionately vaccinated white individuals, and how these crises are linked through the common root cause of structural racism.

  • Caregiver Forums offer solidarity, solace in virtual meetings

    Caregivers across the country found themselves faced with new challenges. The Penn Memory Center began the Caregiver Forums in March 2020 in an attempt to provide caregivers a space where they could talk freely and share advice as they learned to navigate caring for their loved ones during the pandemic.

  • Less is more for the next generation of CAR T cells

    Researchers at Penn Medicine have discovered that shortening the amino acid chain links, the two halves of the CAR plastered together and pre-activated the CAR T cells to latch onto tumor cells and attack them.

  • Humans of Penn Nursing: Joshua Porat-Dahlerbruch

    After graduating with a Ph.D. in May, Porat-Dahlerbruch will attend Ben-Gurion University in Israel on a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue his proposed project, “Nurse Practitioner Integration into the Israeli Healthcare System.” Israel implemented the nurse practitioner role just a few years ago, but, he says, health system-level challenges are hindering their full ability to help improve health care.  Through his research project, Porat-Dahlerbruch will help ease the integration of nurse practitioners into the Israeli healthcare system.

  • Miriam Robbins receives American Academy of Oral Medicine’s highest award

    The professor of clinical oral medicine and restorative dentistry, and director of the School’s Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, has been recognized by the American Academy of Oral Medicine at this year’s recipient of its Craig S. Miller Diamond Pin Award. The Academy’s highest honor, the Award is presented for exceptional and dedicated service to the Academy.

  • Penn Nursing dean Antonia Villarruel to receive the Ohtli Award from the government of Mexico

    This is the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican Government to individuals and organizations that have stood out for their work in favor of the empowerment of the Mexican diaspora and helped to “open the path” for the new Mexican American and Latino generations.
