For the Record: Field Hockey
When the College Courses for Teachers department at Penn was founded in 1906, it opened up opportunities for women to enter a degree-granting program and led to a rise in women enrolled at the University in the early 1900s. This resulted in an increased demand for extracurricular activities, so Penn increased the recreational activities offered to women.

Penn Medicine Study Suggests "Growth Charts" for Cognitive Development May Lead to Earlier Diagnosis and Treatment for Children with Risk for Psychosis
Penn Medicine researchers have developed a better way to assess and diagnose psychosis in young children. By “growth charting” cognitive development alongside the presentation of psychotic symptoms, they have demonstrated that the most significant lags in cognitive development correlate with the most severe cases of psychosis. Their findings are published online this month in JAMA Psychiatry.

Penn Geophysicist Teams With Mathematicians to Describe How River Rocks Round
For centuries, geologists have recognized that the rocks that line riverbeds tend to be smaller and rounder further downstream. But these experts have not agreed on the reason these patterns exist. Abrasion causes rocks to grind down and become rounder as they are transported down the river. Does this grinding reduce the size of rocks significantly, or is it that smaller rocks are simply more easily transported downstream?

Teledermatology App System Offers Efficiencies and Can Reliably Prioritize Inpatient Consults
A new Penn Medicine study shows that remote consultations from dermatologists using a secure smart phone app are reliable at prioritizing care for hospitalized patients with skin conditions. Researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania report in JAMA Dermatology that this teledermatology process is reliable and can help deliver care more efficiently in busy academic hospitals and potentially in community hospital settings.

Expanding Horizons Through Arab Music at Penn
After hearing Arab music for the first time at a wedding a couple of years ago, University of Pennsylvania senior Idrees Syed was so enthralled with the sounds that he soon began taking drumming lessons in the Arab Music Ensemble percussion class at Penn.“The sounds were just mesmerizing,” Syed says.

Penn Medicine and CHOP Study: New Genetic Analysis Confirms Connection Between Cholesterol and Heart Disease
New research is adding to a growing body of evidence showing the effects that genetics, cholesterol and other lipids in the blood have on coronary heart disease (CHD). Previous research has shown elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc, commonly known as “bad” cholesterol) are known to cause heart disease, but the effects of other lipids such as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc, or “good” cholesterol) and triglycerides (TG) have been less clear.

Penn Dhamaka’s energetic, arm-pumping, feet-shuffling, body-twisting dance routines are inspired by traditional South Asian dance, but the all-male troupe’s flair is all their own.The University of Pennsylvania student performance group fuses a variety of dance styles in their sequences. In addition to classic South Asian dance, their moves are a mix of Bollywood, contemporary American dance, hip-hop and stepping.
