Penn to Host 2012 Ivy Plus STEM Symposium & Workshops for Diverse Scholars
PHILADELPHIA — On October 4-6, 2012, the inaugural Ivy Plus Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Symposium & Workshop for Diverse Scholars will take place at the University of Pennsylvania. The conference targets students participating in the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program, Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, Minority Access to Research Careers, and Minority Biomedical Research Support (RISE) Program. Other interested students are also encouraged to apply.

Penn Medicine Researchers Study Prescription-Drug Monitoring Programs
Individual use of prescription opioids has increased four-fold since the mid-1990s, in part due to increased awareness of pain control for chronic conditions such as low back pain and fibromyalgia and a Joint Commission mandate that hospitals assess patients' pain as a "vital sign" along with their blood pressure and temperature. During the same timeframe, however, the number of people using these drugs recreationally, becoming addicted to them, and dying of overdoses has also shot up.

Penn's Perelman School of Medicine Selected by NIH as Center of Excellence in Pain Education
The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and School of Dental Medicine, has been designated a national Center of Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPEs) by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Penn: Photodynamic Therapy Added to Lung-Sparing Surgery Improves Survival for Mesothelioma Patients
Among patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, treatment with lung-sparing surgery in combination with photodynamic therapy (PDT) yielded unusually long survival rates, with median survival rates up to two or more years longer than is reported with traditional treatments, according to new research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The research is published in the latest issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

PennMOVES Sale Will Be Held Saturday, June 2
WHAT: PennMOVES, now in its fifth year, is an effort to find a home for items University of Pennsylvania students leave behind at the end of the academic year. Clothes, furniture, kitchen gear, electronics and more have been collected and sorted and will be offered for sale, with proceeds going to Goodwill Industries. Penn study documents gender pay gap among stockbrokers
The excesses of Wall Street may be big news, but behind the headlines is another major story. When it comes to men and women stockbrokers, men take home bigger paychecks. Newly published research by Janice Madden, a professor of urban studies, regional science, sociology and real estate at Penn, shows that female stockbrokers can earn up to 20 percent less than their male counterparts. “Stockbrokers are among the highest paid workers, yet they have the greatest gender inequality among all sales worker jobs,” she says.

Penn Offers Benefits-tax Offset to Same-sex Couples
PHILADELPHIA –- Beginning July 1, the University of Pennsylvania will provide a tax offset of as much as $125 per month for employees who are covering same-sex domestic partners under their Penn medical plans, with a maximum of $1,500 per year. This offset will appear in employees’ paychecks as additional taxable income — minus applicable state and federal taxes — starting in late July.
