Prison beds are expensive. Housing an inmate in a high-security facility can cost more than a year of tuition at Penn. For example, the South Carolina Department of Corrections' recent capital improvements plan estimates, in 2006 dollars, $50 million in construction costs for a 500-bed, maximum-security institution, or about $100,000 per bed, and $99 million in construction costs for a 1,500-bed, high-security facility, or around $66,000 per bed.

Rare Book & Manuscript Library renovations continue
The Rare Book & Manuscript Library on the 6th floor of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library has completed the first phase of its multi-year renovation project to transform the space into a special collections center that will also offer patrons scenic views of the Penn campus and the city.

Turn off the lights
The results of Penn’s Power Down Challenge 2011 are in—and the energy-saving outcomes are impressive. The three-week competition, which lasted from Nov. 1 through 20, challenged 15 campus buildings to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness about what the Penn community can do to conserve energy.
