Art exhibit showcases lesser-known works
Penn has prominent works of art on display around campus, including Claes Oldenburg’s “Split Button” outside the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center and Robert Indiana’s “LOVE” sculpture on College Green. But the University also holds some lesser-known pieces in its 6,000-item art collection.

Penn and Rutgers Psychologists Increase Understanding of How the Brain Perceives Shades of Gray
PHILADELPHIA — Vision is amazing because it seems so mundane. Peoples’ eyes, nerves and brains translate light into electrochemical signals and then into an experience of the world around them. A close look at the physics of just the first part of this process shows that even seemingly simple tasks, like keeping a stable perception of an object’s color in different lighting conditions or distinguishing black and white objects, is, in fact, very challenging.

Children’s Festival founder honored with Creative Spirit Award
In the 1980s, former Penn professor Catherine “Kaki” Marshall noticed a campaign in major Canadian cities to provide quality theater festivals for children. Impressed by their efforts, Marshall decided to mimic the campaign in the United States. “It was such a wake-up call,” Marshall says. “It’s so necessary for a culture to have children exposed to the best in arts.”

Penn Honors the Nation’s Veterans
PHILADELPHIA — In honor of Veterans Day, the University of Pennsylvania will hold a flag-raising ceremony on Locust Walk in front of Van Pelt Library at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. Co-hosted by the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs, Veterans Upward Bound Program and Veterans @ Penn Committee, the ceremony will include a presentation of colors by the U.S.
