Postdoctoral fellowships
Penn’s Academic Diversity Fellowship Program is seeking talented scholars and educators from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, economic status and gender identities to apply for postdoctoral training in all areas of study. Three-year fellowships are available to graduate students from Penn and other institutions who have completed, or will complete, the requirements for a Ph.D. by their start date.

Combination Therapy Shows Promise for Rare, Deadly Cancer Caused by Asbestos, Penn Study Shows
Pleural mesothelioma patients who undergo lung-sparing surgery in combination with photodynamic therapy (PDT) show superior overall survival than patient treated using the conventional therapy of extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) (or en bloc removal of the lung and surrounding tissue) with PDT, indicates new research from the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The research is published in the June 2011 issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Penn Research Shows That Short-Nosed Dogs Can Breathe a Little Easier During Critical Care
PHILADELPHIA — Dogs with smushed-in noses may be adorable, but that distinctive short nose can lead to respiratory distress and disease, hospital visits and sometimes the need to receive mechanical assistance just to breathe. Fortunately, a study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine shows that these dogs do just as well as their longer-nosed kin during mechanical ventilation procedures.

Former Gov. Rendell, Leaders in Education Address the Gap Between Labor Markets and Education
PHILADELPHIA -- At last week’s “Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Jobs in Metropolitan America: The Policy, Practice and Research Issues” conference, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said that Congress is asked every year for more work visas to staff computer programming jobs because there are no Americans willing or capable to fill those jobs. While firmly in support of immigration to invigorate the United States, Rendell asked: “Why aren’t our kids able to fill those jobs? Because the education system fails.”

Penn Announces Partnership With Chinese Academy of Sciences for Center of Excellence in Brain Mapping
BEIJING, CHINA –- In a ceremony today, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) announced a collaboration agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to develop a joint Center of Excellence in Brain Mapping for the purpose of collaborative research and education in neuroimaging.

Penn Researchers Help Nanoscale Engineers Choose Self-Assembling Proteins
PHILADELPHIA — Engineering structures on the smallest possible scales — using molecules and individual atoms as building blocks — is both physically and conceptually challenging. An interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has now developed a method of computationally selecting the best of these blocks, drawing inspiration from the similar behavior of proteins in making biological structures.

Penn study rethinks how children learn first words
A team of Penn psychologists is helping to overturn the dominant theory of how children learn their first words. The research, conducted by postdoctoral fellow Tamara Nicol Medina and professors John Trueswell and Lila Gleitman in the School of Arts and Sciences, suggests that learning occurs more in moments of insight than gradually through repeated exposure.
