U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to speak at Global Colloquium of University Presidents at Penn
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will open the fifth annual meeting of the Global Colloquium of University Presidents at Penn on Monday, April 4, with a public address on empowering women. The Colloquium, a select group of 29 university presidents from around the world convened annually to discuss a topic of immediate concern to the secretary-general, will address the challenge of “Empowering Women to Change the World: What the UN and Universities Can Do” from April 4 to 5 at Penn.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jared Diamond speaks for Year of Water on April 6
As parts of Africa suffer continued drought and Japan tries to recover from one of the worst earthquakes and tsunamis in recorded history, scholar-author Jared Diamond will give the Penn community insight into water’s impact on society at a public talk on Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in Irvine Auditorium.

Penn introduces a new way to collect your pay
Penn is stepping up its commitment to sustainability by introducing a new and paperless way to get your pay.Beginning this spring, the University will stop issuing paper paychecks. Employees will instead have the choice of receiving their pay through either direct deposit or the new ADP TotalPay Card system.

Penn Offers Admission to 12 Percent of Applicants for Class of 2015
PHILADELPHIA -- From an applicant pool 18 percent higher than last year, the University of Pennsylvania has offered admission to 3,880, or 12.3 percent, of 31,659 students who applied for the Class of 2015. Last year Penn received 26,940 applications and admitted 3,840. The new admitted group, representing all 50 states, is 51 percent male, 49 percent female and 44 percent Asian, black/African-American, American Indian and Hispanic/Latino. Eleven percent are international students from 82 countries.

Creating Canopy: Penn, Philadelphia Partner to Distribute Free Trees to University Homeowners
PHILADELPHIA – As the first institution to take part in Philadelphia’s Creating Canopy program, the University of Pennsylvania is partnering with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department to distribute to faculty and staff homeowners in the city 300 free trees to plant on their property.

School of Social Policy & Practice Students Unite With Other Universities to “Shout Out for Social Work”
PHILADELPHIA — Students from the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, will don bright blue t-shirts and converge on 30th Street Station to talk with travelers and passersby about social work and how social workers can help them. Also participating in the 8 a.m. event on March 31 will be social work students from West Chester University, Temple University, La Salle University and Bryn Mawr College.

Deciphering Hidden Code Reveals Brain Activity
By combining sophisticated mathematical techniques more commonly used by spies instead of scientists with the power and versatility of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a Penn neurologist has developed a new approach for studying the inner workings of the brain. A hidden pattern is encoded in the seemingly random order of things presented to a human subject, which the brain reveals when observed with fMRI. The research is published in the journal NeuroImage.

UNESCO Chair Established at Penn GSE
A UNESCO Chair in Learning and Literacy has been established at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. The first of its kind at a U.S. school of education, the UNESCO Chair will focus on achieving UN Millennium Development Goals in the area of basic education and literacy in the poorest countries of the world.Established within Penn’s International Literacy Institute (ILI), the UNESCO Chair will be held by Dr. Dan Wagner, a professor of education at Penn GSE and Director of the ILI.

Researchers Explore Conflicts of Interest in Development of Cardiovascular Practice Guidelines
A new analysis by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine of recent cardiology clinical practice guidelines has found that more than half of the experts involved in the development of these guidelines reported a conflict of interest (COI).
