Spikes in News Coverage of HPV, Cervical Cancer Linked to Increased Knowledge, but Important Information Omitted
PHILADELPHIA -– In the months surrounding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the human papillomavirus vaccine, an increase in the volume of news coverage was associated with changes in the public’s knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer. However, a new study reveals that many news stories were missing important information, including the sexually transmitted nature of the disease.

Penn Libraries Receive Chaim Potok Papers
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania is now home to papers documenting the life and literary career of novelist, rabbi and professor Chaim Potok.The collection includes correspondence, writings, lectures, sermons, article clippings, memorabilia and fan mail. One of the letters is from writer, Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, who wrote to Potok in 1992 saying he read all of Potok’s books “with fervor and friendship.”

Penn to Hold Two Weeks of Events Honoring the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
PHILADELPHIA –- A two-week observance at the University of Pennsylvania of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. begins with a Day of Service, Monday, Jan. 18, when volunteers will participate in activities that have become staples of this event: community-beautification projects, a food drive benefiting West Philadelphia’s People’s Emergency Center, the assembly of charitable gift packages and commemorative art projects.

Jacob “Jake” Lewko, a senior captain on the Ivy League Champion Penn football team, was recently named to the prestigious AFCA Football Championship Subdivision Coaches’ All-America Team.

Actress Anna Deavere Smith to Explore Human Spirit, Resiliency in ‘Let Me Down Easy’ Presentation Jan. 26
WHO: Anna Deavere Smith, an actress, teacher and playwright, will discuss and perform selected scenes from her latest highly acclaimed piece, “Let Me Down Easy.” Smith has had roles in the films “Philadelphia,” “An American President,” “The Human Stain” and “Rent,” and in television she has worked on “The Practice,” “The West Wing” and, currently, “Nurse Jackie.” She is also founder and director of the Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue and teaches at New York University. Mukesh D. Ambani Awarded Inaugural Dean’s Medal From the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science
PHILADELPHIA –- Mukesh D. Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd., has been awarded the inaugural Dean’s Medal from Eduardo Glandt, dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science. Ambani was recognized for visionary leadership in the application of engineering and technology for the betterment of mankind. The medal was awarded at a gala ceremony at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai, India.

Penn Law School Professor and Students Assist in Second Supreme Court Case
PHILADELPHIA -– It’s a rare opportunity for law students to work on one Supreme Court case, but some University of Pennsylvania Law School students have had the opportunity to handle two cases in this school year. Students in Penn Law’s Supreme Court Clinic are assisting in Abbott v. Abbott, a case involving a parent taking a child out of a country without the other parent’s consent.
