PHILADELPHIA — Students from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Pediatric Acute/Chronic and Oncology Nurse Practitioner program earned first place for their research poster at the 24th Annual Pediatric Nursing National Conference in Las Vegas.

PHILADELPHIA -- Robert Coover, Joan Didion and Mary Gordon will be the Kelly Writers House Fellows at the University of Pennsylvania for spring 2009. Coover will visit Penn Feb. 23-24, Didion March 30-31 and Gordon April 27-28. Each Fellow’s visit will begin with a 6:30 p.m. Monday reading at Kelly Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk, followed by a 10 a.m. Tuesday brunch and an interview-conversation the next morning which will be webcast live.

At the time of its construction in the 1920’s, the South Street Bridge operated as a surface route for streetcars carrying passengers back and forth between Center City and West Philadelphia. These days, the bridge enables people to reach Penn and other points in University City from I-76, as well as the Fitler Square and Naval Square neighborhoods on the opposite side of the Schuylkill.

On any given day, there are between 200,000 and 400,000 ex-prisoners living in Philadelphia, nearly 20 percent of the city’s population. Close to 40,000 ex-convicts are released into the Philadelphia region each year, and most will not receive the organized traditional services they need to transition back into society, a researcher in the School of Social Policy and Practice has found.
