Childhood Obesity Indicates Greater Risk of School Absenteeism, University of Pennsylvania Study Reveals
PHILADELPHIA -- In the first study of how weight may affect school attendance, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University have found that overweight children are at greater risk of school absenteeism than their normal-weight peers. The study of more than a thousand 4th, 5th and 6th graders in the Philadelphia school system also determined that body mass index, or BMI, is as significant a factor in determining absenteeism from school as age, race, socioeconomic status and gender, formerly the four main predictors.

Penn Students Reach Out to Hancock County, "the Forgotten Part of the Katrina Disaster"
PHILADELPHIA - Two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, residents of Hancock County, Miss., continue to suffer from a mental-health and social-services crisis, and students and alumni from the University of Pennsylvania have stepped in to lend a hand.The people from Penn are traveling to a region where suicides, suicide attempts, child abuse and domestic violence have skyrocketed and where there has been a surge in reported cases of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Alumnus Krishna Singh Gives $20 Million to Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science
PHILADELPHIA -- Krishna Singh has made the largest single gift in the history of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
