WHO: Penn Summer Mentorship Program for high school students

WHAT: Graduation ceremony

WHERE: Penn Law School, Room G213, 34th Street between Chestnut and Sansom streets

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

The University of Pennsylvania will hold a graduation ceremony for 61 Philadelphia high school students who participated in the Penn Summer Mentorship Program.  The graduates, 10th and 11th graders from 32 local public high schools, will present their final projects.  

Under the guidance of Penn graduate-student and faculty mentors, the high school students worked on projects in fields of their choice in dental medicine, medicine, nursing, education, engineering/Internet technology or law.

The students will present a variety of final projects, including:

* A talk on meningitis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder by students in the medicine program.

* A community health assessment by students in the nursing program.

* A presentation on in-school violence by students in the education program.

* A presentation on courthouse visits and mock trials by students in the law program.

The Penn Summer Mentorship Program, sponsored by Penn's Office of the Provost and the School District of Philadelphia, was created to give college exposure to students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education (lower-income families and those seeking to be the first in their families to attend college.)
