PHILADELPHIA -- New research shows that children attending Head Start programs and other center-based child care are better prepared for kindergarten and maintain higher skills throughout the year. They achieve higher levels of early literacy and math skills and display work habits and motor skills that are more advanced than their peers. These same children had higher attendance levels than those who had no formal preschool experiences.

PHILADELPHIA – The reflections of a faculty panel and a large-scale collaborative art sculpture are among the events planned on Sept. 11 at the University of Pennsylvania as the campus community marks the first anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania.The daylong program, "9.11.02: Remembrance, Reflection, Community," will also honor the 16 Penn alumni who lost their lives that day a year ago. A memorial wall in Houston Hall will feature a space dedicated to their memory.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from IBM for a teacher professional development initiative that will use technology to link Penn with the School District of Philadelphia and the state Department of Education.

PHILADELPHIA – Aravind Joshi, a cognitive scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named the third recipient of the David E. Rumel-hart Prize for contemporary contributions to the formal analysis of human cognition. Joshi, the Henry Salvatori Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science, Department of Computer and Information Science, School of Engineering and Applied Science, was chosen for his seminal contributions to the formal and computational analysis of language.

With pinhead-sized grafts of testicular tissue from newborn mammals, scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have induced mice to produce fully functional sperm from evolutionarily distant species. The result has important implications for preserving the germ lines of critically endangered species as well as prized livestock. The study, in which male mice produced functional gametes first from other mice and then from pigs and goats, is reported in the Aug. 15 issue of the journal Nature.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania will partner with three low-performing West Philadelphia schools under an agreement with the Philadelphia School Reform Commission. Penn GSE will receive funding to help improve student achievement at Henry C. Lea Elementary School at 47th and Locust streets, Alexander Wilson Elementary School at 46th and Woodland streets and William C. Bryant Elementary School at 60th and Cedar streets.
