Texas Higher Education Must Confront Hard Choices, Penn GSE Study Finds
PHILADELPHIA — Texas will be forced to put the state’s economic growth at stake by closing the doors to college opportunity for thousands of young people, many of them Latino, unless leaders prioritize their goals for higher education and develop a plan to pay for them, according to a new report released by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Higher Education Research.

Penn GSE Student Uses Humor to Create Change
David Low is a funny guy. As a teacher in Arizona, he had funny students, and he is convinced they helped get rid of an unnecessary test. Low, a Ph.D. student in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, told the story at a recent meeting for teachers and prospective teachers in suburban Philadelphia.

Penn GSE Student Works to Empower High School Students
PHILADELPHIA — As in many large cities across the country, high school students in Philadelphia sometimes witness violence as a part of their daily lives. But, one teacher had the courage to take steps toward making a difference for his students and others. A student-teacher at University City High School, Andrew Biros, a 24-year-old native of Yardley, Pa., noticed some of his students felt helpless about the criminal activity they see, believing that there is nothing that can be done to stop the violence.

Penn GSE Event Addresses Global Literacy, Recognizes Inauguration of UNESCO Chair
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education will host “Global Literacy in the 21st Century: Problems and Prospects,” at 4 p.m., Thursday, March 15 in Huntsman Hall. Featuring Irina Bokova, the director-general of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, this symposium is free and open to the public.

Penn’s Med Ed Teaches Those Who Teach America’s Doctors
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine have launched Med Ed, a program to enhance the teaching abilities of those who teach America’s doctors. The collaborative program targeting educational leaders in academic medicine will begin in August.
