Penn Graduate School of Education Makes Film Debut With Documentary on "Freedom School"
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education has produced “Freedom School,” a film that will air on WHYY-TV on Feb. 17 at 8:30 p.m. This 26-minute documentary chronicles a summer reading and writing program for children at Shaw Middle School in West Philadelphia.

Penn GSE Professor Explores Technology and Learning in "Worlds of Wonder: Can Video Games Teach Science?"
PHILADELPHIA — A professor from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and researcher in education technology, Yasmin Kafai, has organized a discussion panel, “Worlds of Wonder: Can Video Games Teach Science?” at the American Association for Advancement of Science Annual Meeting in San Diego on Feb. 21. From Whyville to Second Life, Kafai argues that the countless hours children spend playing games can also be used to teach science.

Penn GSE and 15 APEC Member Economies to Conduct International Study in Science, Math Teacher Preparation
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education-International is teaming with 15 other members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to conduct an international study on secondary-school teacher preparation, “Identifying Unique and Promising Practices in Math and Science Teacher Education in APEC Economies.”

Penn Brings Technology-Based Learning to Nicaraguan Community School for Children of Coffee-Farm Workers
PHILADELPHIA — Beginning in early July, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education are partnering with a family of multi-generational Penn alumni to introduce laptop computers and a technology-based curriculum to students and teachers in a rural community school for the children of coffee-farm workers in Nicaragua.

Penn GSE Professor Named Fellow of the International Youth Library in Munich
PHILADELPHIA — Lawrence Sipe, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, has been named a Fellow of Munich’s International Youth Library, a collection of more than 600,000 children’s books. The fellowship began on March 1 and will end May 31. Sipe is an authority in early-childhood literacy development.

Penn Hosts Conference on Virtual Worlds for Education: The Future of Technology Use in Learning
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education is hosting a March 12-13 workshop, “Taxonomy of Virtual Worlds for Education,” designed to bring together teachers, students, researchers and technology providers to brainstorm the ideal virtual world software system for science, technology, engineering and math learning.
