Center for Neuroscience and Society Opens at the University of Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania has launched the Penn Center for Neuroscience and Society, a cross-disciplinary endeavor to increase understanding of the impact of neuroscience on society through research and teaching and to encourage the responsible use of neuroscience for the benefit of humanity.

Penn Will Host First Neuroscience Boot Camp Aug. 6; News Media Welcome
PHILADELPHIA –- Psychologists, neuroscientists, legal scholars and faculty from the University of Pennsylvania are hosting Penn’s first Neuroscience Boot Camp, a nine-day seminar devoted to educating academics, legal and business professionals, economists, medical ethicists, policy makers, philosophers and writers on the impact of emerging neuroscience research and to foster an interdisciplinary effort to encourage responsible and ethical use of neuroscience for human benefit.

PHILADELPHIA -- Karen Glanz, a globally influential public-health scholar, has been named the ninth Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. The appointment was announced today by Penn President Amy Gutmann and Interim Provost Vincent Price.

Out of Africa: Penn Geneticist Publishes Largest-Ever Study on African Genetics Revealing Origins, Migration
PHILADELPHIA –- African, American, and European researchers working in a 10-year collaboration have released the largest-ever study of African genetic data — more than 4 million genotypes — providing a library of new information on the continent which is thought to be the source of the oldest settlements of modern humans. The study was led by Sarah Tishkoff, the David and Lyn Silfen University Associate Professor of the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn Researchers Demonstrate a New Model for Drug Discovery With a Fluorescent Anesthetic
PHILADELPHIA –- A collaboration of University of Pennsylvania and University of Wisconsin chemists and anesthesiologists have identified a fluorescent anesthetic compound that will assist researchers in obtaining more precise information about how anesthetics work in the body and will provide a means to more rapidly test new anesthetic compounds in the search for safer and more effective drugs.The study is published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

PHILADELPHIA – The human brain’s sensitivity to unexpected outcomes plays a fundamental role in the ability to adapt and learn new behaviors, according to a new study by a team of psychologists and neuroscientists from the University of Pennsylvania.
