In New Book, Penn Researcher Says Most Government Programs Don’t Work
PHILADELPHIA — A University of Pennsylvania researcher says most government social programs don’t work, a claim he is certain will not endear him to liberals. But he also says conservatives will not like hearing that there are programs that do work. In a new book, The Third Lie: Why Government Programs Don’t Work and a Blueprint for Change, Richard J. Gelles also says the current economic situation has destroyed the middle class.

Penn’s Field Center Announces Fellow at “Field of Dreams” Luncheon

Penn’s Social Impact of the Arts Project Receives Funds From NEA Philanthropies for Arts Geo-Database
PHILADELPHIA — The Social Impact of the Arts Project, a research project at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy & Practice in collaboration with The Reinvestment Fund and the City of Philadelphia, has received $250,000 in matching funds from ArtPlace, a consortium of national foundations, federal agencies and corporations.

Penn School of Social Policy & Practice to Host Screening and Discussion of “Traces of the Trade”
PHILADELPHIA — “Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North,” a documentary that explores a secretive legacy of slavery in America, will be screened Oct. 4, in Bodek Lounge of Houston Hall at the University of Pennsylvania. Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice, in conjunction with the African-American Resource Center and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, will host the 5-7 p.m., free, public showing.

Penn Study Examines Gender Disparities in Injury Mortality; Men at Exceptional Risk
PHILADELPHIA — Men are more likely than die from injury than are women. Susan B. Sorenson, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice, has evaluated nearly 30 years of national injury mortality data and found that men are at greater risk of injury mortality throughout their lives.

PHILADELPHIA — The Social Impact of the Arts Project, housed at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy & Practice, is teaming with the City of Philadelphia to build and launch a Creative Assets Mapping Database, a Web tool that allows users to monitor growth in creative assets and determine their civic, economic and social impacts.
