Penn Prof on March Madness: Can Losing Lead to Winning?
PHILADELPHIA -- Is your March Madness bracket filled out yet? Imagine you’re watching a close game. As the teams head to the locker room at half time, only two points separate the two competitors. Which team do you think is more likely to win? The team down by one or the team up by one? If you’re like most people, you said up by one. But you’d actually be better off going with the team that is losing. Teams down by one are more likely to win. And the reason tells us a lot about the effects of competition on motivation.

Penn Student Wins Gates Cambridge Scholarship
PHILADELPHIA – University of Pennsylvania senior Eileen Moison has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to spend at least a year at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom pursuing a graduate degree in biochemistry. Afterwards she plans to continue towards a doctoral degree in biochemistry/molecular biology.

University of Pennsylvania Announces 2012 Thouron Award Winners
PHILADELPHIA – Seven University of Pennsylvania seniors and a Penn alumna have received Thouron Awards to pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom. The award winners are: Besan Abu-Joudeh, a statistics and international studies major, is applying to the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London to study for an MSc in Political Economy of Development.

Penn's Center for High Impact Philanthropy Partners in 100Kin10 Initiative for Education
PHILADELPHIA — The Center for High Impact Philanthropy at the University of Pennsylvania will be a partner in 100Kin10, a movement to recruit, prepare and support 100,000 science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, teachers during the next decade.Kate Hovde, senior analyst with the Center, will attend the first 100Kin10 Partner Summit on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Washington, D.C., where Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will launch the event to bring together the network of partners.
