Once Parking Lots, Now a Park: University of Pennsylvania Converts Postal Lands to Open Space
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania announced today that Penn Park, a $40 million green swath of open space and athletic fields, will replace 14 acres of asphalt parking lots once owned by the United States Postal Service.

Penn Research Team Tests Bedside Monitoring of Brain Blood Flow and Metabolism in Stroke Victims
PHILADELPHIA – A University of Pennsylvania team has completed the first successful demonstration of a noninvasive optical device to monitor cerebral blood flow in patients with acute stroke, a leading cause of disability and death. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve the management of patients with stroke and other brain disorders by providing continuous bedside monitoring of brain blood flow and metabolism.

Peace Corps Fellows/USA Partners with Penn for Returning Peace Corps Volunteers
PHILADELPHIA — Through a partnership with Peace Corps Fellows/USA, the University of Pennsylvania now offers returning Peace Corps volunteers the opportunity to attend graduate school at a reduced cost, while aiding underserved U.S. communities through internships. Penn’s Master’s in Public Health Program is the only program in Philadelphia of its kind that is an approved Peace Corps Fellows/USA partner.

Penn Evolutionary Biologist and Computer Scientist Awarded Sloan Research Fellowships
PHILADELPHIA -– Joshua Plotkin, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Pennsylvania, and Steve Zdancewic, associate professor of computer and information science at Penn, have been named Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellows for 2009.

Penn Announces Lowest Tuition Increase in 41 Years
PHILADELPHIA -- Building on its historic, multi-year efforts to increase access and affordability for lower- and middle-income families, the University of Pennsylvania today announced its smallest tuition increase in 41 years. The Budget and Finance Committee of Penn’s Board of Trustees today approved a tuition increase of 3.75 percent for the 2009-10 academic year. The full board is expected to approve the tuition increase at its stated meeting tomorrow.
