51 percent of women unmarried? Not quite, says prof
Experts said last month, for the first time, that more American women are living single than with a husband. The news analysis, conducted by four New York Times reporters and based on 2005 census results, stated that 51 percent of women claim to now be living without a spouse—a percentage that has increased from 35 percent in 1940 and 49 percent in 2000.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson Endow Chair for Equine Disease Research at Penn Veterinary Medicine School

Public Health Activities at Penn Linked in New Center for Public Health Initiatives
PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania has formed a Center for Public Health Initiatives to expand and link public-health activities across the campus. "In the United States and around the world, we have perceived an urgent need for thoughtful, well-trained public health professionals," Penn Provost Ron Daniels said. "Penn's sizeable strengths in genomics, informatics, community-based research, communication, global health, policy and law will help shape the activities of this important new center."

University of Pennsylvania Researchers Find Link: Skin-Penetrating Parasites and Urocanic Acid
PHILADELPHIA - Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have found a link between parasites and skin secretions that contain urocanic acid. This research supports non-governmental organizations' advocacy to use "appropriate technology" to develop inexpensive and practical treatments to prevent infections and to ward off parasitic diseases in poor, developing countries, according to a report published in the January issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

MAGPI Hub at University of Pennsylvania Connects to New Internet2 Network
PHILADELPHIA -- The MAGPI advanced networking hub at the University of Pennsylvania has connected to the new Internet2 Network, providing the research and education community in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware with more than 10 times the capacity of its current network and with new on-demand bandwidth capabilities. MAGPI is the acronym for Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2.

Penn President Endorses Environmental Sustainability Strategy, Reduction of Greenhouse Gases
PHILADELPHIA -- Pledging to significantly reduce emissions that contribute to global warming, Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania, announced today her signing of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Penn will develop a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality by reducing campus greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere.

Dan Ben-Amos Wins 2006 National Jewish Book Award
PHILADELPHIA - Dan Ben-Amos, professor of folklore and Asian and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Pennsylvania, has taken the top prize in the National Jewish Book Award's Sephardic Culture category for the book he edited entitled "Folktales of the Jews: Volume 1: Tales from the Sephardic Dispersion." The first in a five-volume series, it was also a finalist in the Scholarship category.

A six member team of students, faculty and alumni of CommuniTech spent two and a half weeks during the winter break in Cameroon to establish computer labs.
