Leading Experts on Leonardo daVinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti to Gather at Penn for Two-Day Conference
PHILADELPHIA -- Scholars from across the United States and Europe will visit the University of Pennsylvania for the second annual Coccia Centennial Celebration of Italian Culture, hosted by Penn's Center for Italian Studies. The two-day conference, which is free and open to the public, will commence at 3 p.m., April 1, in the Terrace Room in Logan Hall. Papers will be presented on Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti's mural projects.

Landscape architecture has come of age in recent years, and it’s a transformation James Corner, chair of Penn’s landscape architecture department, is only too happy to see. Yes, he says, practitioners in the field still design parks and gardens and open spaces, but increasingly they’re also being called on to reinvent blast furnace sites, former strip mines and other post-industrial remains that “nobody knows what to do with.”

Doctorow on religion, Holocaust, ‘writer's mind’
READING/Writers House Fellow reads from his latest masterpiece. “We’re a family of writers and readers,” said Al Filreis, director of the Kelly Writers House, as he welcomed an eager crowd on March 21 to a reading by celebrated novelist E. L. Doctorow. Bringing renowned writers to such a small space, said Filreis, conveys a sense of intimacy and community. That much was evident from the crowd, packed shoulder to shoulder in two rooms to hear one of this year’s Writers House Fellows read an excerpt from his most recent piece of fiction, “City of God” (Penguin, 2001).

Honorary Degree Recipients Named for Penn's 249th Commencement
PHILADELPHIA -- Grammy-award-winning musician and producer Quincy Jones, philosopher Saul A. Kripke, Comcast-founder Ralph J. Roberts, journalist Judy Woodruff, and Nancy Fugate Woods, dean of the University of Washington School of Nursing have been named along with speaker Kofi Annan as the honorary degree recipients at the University of Pennsylvania's 249th Commencement ceremony.The ceremony will be held, Monday, May 16 at Franklin Field, 33rd and South streets.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to Deliver Commencement Address at the University of Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA- Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations, will speak at the 249th Commencement of the University of Pennsylvania on May 16. He will also receive an honorary Doctor of Law degree."Secretary General Annan's commitment to international peace, human rights, and the universal values of equality, liberty, opportunity and human dignity make him the perfect speaker to address Penn students as they begin their journey as citizens and leaders of an increasingly complex and interconnected global society, "Penn President Amy Gutmann said.

Penn Announces $100 Million Mixed-Use Development in University City
Philadelphia- The University of Pennsylvania and Hanover RS Limited partnership of Texas will develop a $100 million mixed-use building of luxury apartments, retail shops and a parking garage at the northwest corner of 34th and Chestnut streets in University City. The University currently operates a surface parking lot at that location and will lease the land to Hanover for 65 years.

Week of Activities Celebrate Dedication of Riepe College House in Honor of Alumni-Donors
PHILADELPHIA -- A weeklong "Celebration of Giving," March 14-18, will surround the March 17 dedication and renaming of Spruce College House as Riepe College House in honor of Trustees Chairman James Riepe and his wife Gail, a member of the Board of Overseers for Penn's School of Veterinary Medicine. The celebration recognizes the Riepes' $10 million pledge to support the College House Renovation Project and honors their longstanding dedication to strengthening student life at Penn.
