Penn Summer Mentorship Program Graduation Ceremony Showcases Student Projects
WHO: Penn Summer Mentorship Program for high school studentsWHAT: Graduation ceremonyWHERE: Penn Law School, Room G213, 34th Street between Chestnut and Sansom streetsWHEN: Friday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.The University of Pennsylvania will hold a graduation ceremony for 61 Philadelphia high school students who participated in the Penn Summer Mentorship Program. The graduates, 10th and 11th graders from 32 local public high schools, will present their final projects.

Ground-breaking Celebration Set for July 18 for The Radian Student Housing Community
WHAT: A ceremonial ground breaking celebrating the construction of The Radian, a student apartment community in the 3900 block of Walnut Street in Philadelphia, adjacent to the University of Pennsylvania campus and developed by University Partners and Inland American Communities. Scheduled to open in August 2008, the $50 million-plus building will feature a 14-story, 150-unit apartment community as well as more than 40,000 square feet of street- and mezzanine-level retail stores. Its construction will include environmentally friendly energy features.

Heather Weiss Frattone Named to Post at Penn Law School
PHILADELPHIA -- Heather Weiss Frattone has been named associate dean for career planning and placement at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her appointment is effective July 9."Heather brings to this position an impressive track record in legal practice and policy development as well as great intelligence, energy and creativity," Michael A. Fitts, Penn Law dean, said.

Penn's MAGPI Unit to Facilitate Global Multicast of "Live Earth" Concert Using Internet2 Technology
WHAT: A live multicast of the "Live Earth" concert series, a global event featuring a 24-hour series of eight concerts that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people in support of a global movement to solve the climate crisis. WHO: The University of Pennsylvania's Division of Information Services and Computing MAGPI unit will provide the service, along with partners Internet2, Penn Video Network, Montgomery County Community College and Defenders of Wildlife.

Mennonite Photographs at Penn's Arthur Ross Gallery
PHILADELPHIA - "The Mennonites: Photographs by Larry Towell," which opens at the University of Pennsylvania's Arthur Ross Gallery on July 31, offers 50 photographs documenting a rare visual history of an isolated cultural group. The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 23, illustrates the Mennonites' integrity and lifestyle simplicity, giving viewers access into a devout religious group living in insular Mexican colonies where photography is generally forbidden.

University of Pennsylvania to Build 10-Story Tower Designed to Facilitate Translational Research
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania will construct a $370 million, state-of-the-art biomedical research facility as part of an ongoing commitment to strengthen its international leadership in biomedical discovery. Designed by architect Rafael Vinoly of Rafael Vinoly Architects PC, the building will be physically integrated with the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine and the Roberts Proton Therapy Center now under construction on the former Civic Center site.

Penn Grad Student Wins Miss Pennsylvania Title
PHILADELPHIA - Rachel Brooks, a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania's Fels Institute of Government is the new Miss Pennsylvania and will represent the state in the Miss America Pageant.The 24-year-old from Broomall, Pa., competed as Miss River City.As the new Miss Pennsylvania, Brooks will be awarded a $7,000 scholarship. Her volunteer platform is "Autism Awareness: Unlocking the Mystery." She plans to pursue a career in public service, academia and private consulting.

Statement by President Amy Gutmann Opposing Boycott of Israeli Academics
A small leadership group of the new British University and Colleges Union has recommended a boycott of Israeli universities and scholars by British universities. This proposed boycott represents a direct assault on a core principle of academic freedom. University scholars must be free to produce and disseminate knowledge and understanding, without threat of interference or penalty, regardless of the policies of their national governments. This freedom is a sine qua non of higher education's global--and globally recognized--mission.
