Penn President Amy Gutmann Meets With Vice President Biden on Stimulus Funding for Research
WASHINGTON -- University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann attended a meeting at the White House today as an invited guest of Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to discuss research funding related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Also in attendance were White House science advisor John Holdren and five other university presidents.

Dr. J. Larry Jameson to Lead Penn Medicine
PHILADELPHIA -- J. Larry Jameson, M.D., Ph.D., has been named the next executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania for the Health System and dean of Penn’s School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2011. The announcement was made today by Penn President Amy Gutmann.

University of Pennsylvania Makes Top 20 in Sierra Club List of ‘America’s 100 Greenest Schools’
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania came in at No. 19 –- up from No. 45 last year -- in the Sierra Club Magazine’s ranking of colleges it believes are doing the most for the planet. Penn was cited particularly for its Green Fund program, which awards grants to faculty, staff or students for innovative sustainability proposals. According to the September/October issue of the magazine, “Penn spurs competition to help execute its Climate Action Plan.”

Nine Penn Students and Five Alumni Awarded Fulbright International Exchange Educational Scholarships
Nine University of Pennsylvania students and five Penn alumni have been awarded scholarships to participate in Fulbright international educational exchange program. More than 1,500 U.S. citizens will travel abroad for one year of foreign study in one of 155 foreign countries, sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Penn Research Points to the Influence of Non-Catholics on the Changes Brought by Vatican II
PHILADELPHIA – A new analysis of voting patterns among bishops at the Second Vatican Council points to the indirect influence of non-Catholic churches in the Council’s liberalization of the Catholic Church. Melissa Wilde, an associate professor of sociology in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, led a team of researchers that investigated data from the Vatican Secret Archive to determine the critical factors influencing how bishops voted at the Second Vatican Council.
