First scientific director for Abramson Institute
- Craig B. Thompson (M'77), M.D., has been named the first scientific director of the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, a part of the Cancer Center.
Thompson, an oncologist and immunologist who heads the University of Chicago's Gwen Knapp Center for Lupus and Immunology Research, will take his new post in early 1999. The failure of the body's immune system to recognize and attack cancer is a promising avenue of research in treating cancer, and Thomson said one of his first priorities is to is to recruit senior investigators experienced in the process of applying laboratory discoveries to clinical usefulness.
- Ten new police recruits were sworn in Nov. 23. Two of them, Ernest Bloodsaw and Norman Owens Jr., were sent to the Police Academy after outstanding service at the University. Bloodsaw was a dispatcher with the Division of Public Safety for five and a half years, and Owens was a supervisor for SpectaGuard. The other eight recruits come to Penn with police experience from other police departments.

Also transferred to the Detective Unit were (from left) former Officers Raymond Rodman and Marvin Jones, pictured with Det. Cmdr. Tom King and Chief Maureen Rush.
New special service investigators are Barbara Perovich, Philomena Stewart and Linda Strau.
