Fagin termed living legend in nursing
- Claire Fagin, Ph.D., FAAN, RN, former interim president of the University and former dean of the School of Nursing, was honored Oct. 29 as a Living Legend of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) for her achievements in nursing, nursing education, nursing scholarship and for her effort in assuring quality health care for all. Fagin, who became the first child psychiatric nurse to hold a doctorate more than 30 years ago, changed hospital practice across the country when her dissertation and subsequent research showed that hospitalized children fared better when their parents roomed in with them. As dean of nursing, she turned the school into a nursing research powerhouse that now attracts the highest level of federal research dollars of all nursing schools.
- Amos B. Smith, Ph.D, the Rhodes-Thompson Professor of Chemistry, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Organic Letters, a new peer-reviewed chemistry journal to be published by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Organic Letters, which will appear both in hard copy and on the Web, is the first of three new journals planned by the ACS to encourage lower-cost alternatives to high-priced journals and to encourage faster dissemination of research results.
