Stick it to me
You slapped them all over your notebook when you were in high school. You've probably got a few on your window, or maybe on your refrigerator door. But what are all those stickers doing in an art gallery?
Making a statement, that's what. "Sticker Shock," one of two exhibits currently on display at the Institute of Contemporary Art, features artists who have taken a ubiquitous form of advertising - the sticker - and turned it on its head. The show includes Jim Winters' vinyl mini-portraits of pop icons, drag queens and other unusual people, Shepard Fairey's pervasive Andre the Giant stickers and a documentary film about his project, "Andre the Giant Has a Posse," and stickers and sticker-related works by more than a dozen local and national artists. There's even a refrigerator (photo) in the show, covered with stickers by Aaron Rose and Phil Frost, and other displays of actual commercial stickers.
