• Aaron T. Beck, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry, whose work has reshaped the fields of psychiatry, psychology, social work and behavioral health, was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine in the fall.

     He also received the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy's 1998 Lifetime Achievement Award.
     The Academy of Sciences noted that Beck "has almost single-handedly restored the relevance of psychotherapy." His goal-directed approach to treatment altered the face and psychotherapy, and his pioneering methods in the treatment of depression, anxiety, panic, substance abuse and personality disorders, have led peers to refer to him as the father of cognitive psychotherapy.

• David P. Silverman, Ph.D., Curator-in-charge of the Egyptian section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum and Professor and Chair of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Department, has been selected by the Athenaeum of Philadelphia for an Athenaeum Literary Award for his contributions to the books "Ancient Egypt" and "Searching for Ancient Egypt." Silverman has published numerous works on ancient Egypt and is the co-director of an ongoing expedition to Egypt sponsored by the Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The award recognizes literary achievement among authors who reside in Philadelphia at the time their book was written or published.
