Awards for teaching
The School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine have announced the winners of their top teaching awards for 1998-99.
- Robert Rescorla, Ph.D., professor of psychology and former acting dean of the College, received the Ira Abrams Memorial Award for teaching from the School of Arts and Sciences. Rescorla's work focuses on elementary learning processes. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
The following faculty received the School of Medicine's 1998-99 teaching awards:
- Leslie A. Litzky, M.D., assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, received the Leonard Berwick Memorial Teaching Award.
- Louis M. Bell, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics in infectious diseases and emergency medicine at CHOP, received the 1999 Blockley-Osler Award.
- Alan J. Wein, M.D., professor and chair of urology at HUP, received the Robert Dunning Dripps Memorial Award.
- Patrick J. Loll, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of pharmacology, received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Training.
- Laura F. McNicholas, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology and associate director of the fellowship program in the Penn/VA Center on Studies of Addiction, and James M. Steven, M.D., associate professor of anesthesia, received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at an Affiliated Hospital.
- David F. Dinges, Ph.D., professor of psychology in psychiatry, received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching.
- Stephen Ludwig, M.D., professor and associate chair for medical education in the department of pediatrics, and Emma Meagher, M.D., director of the Patient Oriented Research Training Program and associate director of both the Center for the Treatment of Complex Hypertension and the Cardiovascular Risk Intervention Program, received the Special Dean's Award for Excellence.
- Robert Gaiser, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesia, received the Clinical Medicine Teaching Award.
- Alan C. Rosenquist, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience and associate dean for basic science education in the Medical School, received the Basic Science Teaching Award.
Health System honored
- University of Pennsylvania Health System was honored with two awards this month. The Voluntary Hospital Associations recognized UPHS with its Heath System Award in Clinical Effectiveness for 1999 at the organization's leadership conference on April 27. UPHS was recognized for its innovative approaches to care and breakthrough achievements in clinical effectiveness in quality and health and disease management. The American College of Medical Quality will give its inaugural award to UPHS in September for its outstanding contributions in health care and the field of quality management.
Arboretum award
- Chosen jointly by the President's Council on Sustainable Development and Renew America, a Morris Arboretum program will receive the 1998 National Award for Sustainability in the Forests/Rangelands May 3 at the National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America in Detroit. The program, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Program, fosters local awareness and participation in ecological activities.
