Workshops help with home ownership

More help with home ownership is here, from the Office of Community Housing, in the form of workshops for the would-be and new homeowner.

  • Credit counseling and repair: How to repair damaged credit. Common myths about credit, what banks consider in making loans -- credit scoring, credit reports, and sources of credit and their differences. Thursday, Sept. 30, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m., and Tuesday, Nov. 9, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building, 3451 Walnut St.

  • Hiring a contractor: Are you getting what you paid for? Do you know if this guy is safe? What are his responsibilities? These and many other questions answered. Arm yourself against potential cons and gimmicks. Tuesday, Oct. 5, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
  • Home buying seminar: Advantages of home ownership, home buying procedures, shopping for a home, financing, cost of home ownership, what if you have credit problems, where to begin. Thursday, Oct. 7, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at the Office of Off-Campus Living, 4046 Walnut St.
  • Homeowner’s insurance: Learn how to protect your investment. Learn about the different types of insurance and what you need to ensure the proper coverage of your investment. Tuesday, Oct. 12, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
  • Community Housing 101: Come find out about one of the most exciting programs on campus, the Guaranteed Mortgage Program. Learn about the benefits of the program, the process, and general home buying information. Thursday, Oct. 14, 8-9 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m. at the Office of Off-Campus Living; Tuesday, Oct. 26, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
  • Start smart -- first-time home buyers: This is an introductory session to United Bank of Philadelphia’s Start Smart Program, a three-day workshop for first-time buyers. Learn about affordability, credit scoring, grants and more. Thursday, Oct. 28, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m., and Tuesday, Nov. 23 noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
  • Financial planning: Learn how to save for the future. This workshop is designed to educate potential investors. Learn the pros and cons of various types of investments. Tuesday, Nov. 2, noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
  • Title insurance and settlement: One of the last big steps before you get the keys. What it means to have an executed search for clear title, how to prepare for closing, and more. Thursday, Dec. 9, noon to 1 p.m. in Room 720, Franklin Building.
