College sophomore Bo Kim was sitting in the new Silfen Study Center one evening last week a day before the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. “It’s a nice, quiet place to study,” she said. She and a few other friends have been studying there since the center opened about two weeks ago.

Tucked just beyond the 36th Street archway of Williams Hall, the Silfen Study Center offers a quiet, clean, brightly lit atmosphere for students to gather with their books 24 hours a day. The study lounge provides lounge chairs, study tables and individual carrels equipped with Ethernet.

Plus there’s a small cafe just a few steps away in Williams Hall. “I like it [here] because I can also get hot chocolate,” Kim said, pointing to the steaming cup near her notebook.

She and three friends had the center to themselves at 7 p.m. that evening, but Kim said the center is usually crowded in the morning.

The study center, along with the reopening of Irvine Auditorium, are the first installments of the new Perelman Quadrangle student center.
