• Linda Aiken, RN, Ph.D., FAAN, Professor of Sociology, was awarded the Clinical Scholarship Award by the Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing. She is being honored with this award in recognition of her work in building multinational, interdisciplinary research teams that demonstrated the contribution of nurse staffing to patient outcomes in hospitals.
  
  
• Chung-Pei Ma, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, was named a Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation, a private foundation for the advancement of science. This honor, which goes to beginning faculty in the sciences who excel in both teaching and research, includes an unrestricted $50, 000 award. Ma is one of 18 recipients of this award.
  
  
• Robin Hochstrasser, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, has received the American Chemical Society’s E. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy. The award is sponsored by Rohm & Haas Company in recognition of Hochstrasser’s pioneering spectroscopic experiments involving dynamic processes in crystals, solutions and proteins. Hochstrasser also serves as director of Penn’s regional laser laboratory.
  
  
• Madeleine Joullié, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded the American Chemical Society’s Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences, sponsored by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc. This award recognized Joullié for her 40 years in chemistry teaching and research in which she encouraged women to choose careers in chemical sciences and engineering.
  
  
• Anthony Garito, Ph.D. and Arjun Yodh, Ph.D., both Professors of Physics, were elected Fellows of the American Physical Society. Garito was chosen for his contributions to the understanding of enhancement mechanisms for second- and third-order nonlinear optical processes in organic and polymer structures. Yodh was chosen for his work on the use of diffusing light fields and studies of the structural, dynamical and spectroscopic properties of highly scattering materials.
