40-year gala

“There’s no bad time for dessert,” proclaimed Annenberg Dean Kathleen Hall Jamieson.

It could be argued that the entire Sept. 28 gala to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Annenberg School of Communications -- and its newly renovated building -- was dessert. The scrumptious cast of speakers included news anchor Tom Brokaw and New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman. And enjoying the celebration were Walter Annenberg himself and his wife, Leonore, both trustees.

But the dean’s quip referred to the eclairs served before, instead of after, the Annenberg Distinguished Lecture in Communication at the Zellerbach Theatre -- because the distinguished lecturer, filmmaker and producer (“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill”) Duncan Kenworthy (ASC’73), experienced a transatlantic flight delay.

Kenworthy served up a confection of a lecture. “You’ll be pleased to hear that I have some visual aids,” he said, presenting clips and outtakes with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. The audience left sated.
