To the lighthouse in the garden

Among lighthouses on display: New York’s Fort Tomkins Light (now demolished), New Jersey’s Sandy Hook Light and Massachusetts’ Brant Point Light.

For the latest addition to the Morris Arboretum’s annual Garden Railway exhibit, designer Paul Busse looked oceanward — to America’s historic lighthouses.

Some of the best-known of these treasures, such as Massachusetts’ Brant Point Light (photo), have joined the historic houses and Philadelphia landmarks on display at the Arboretum’s summer crowd-pleaser. And tying them all together, of course, are the trains — scale models of vintage and state-of-the art equipment, winding their way over structures of sticks and leaves.
