Moderna coronavirus vaccine uses method ‘developed largely’ by University of Pennsylvania researchers, doctor says
Jonathan A. Epstein of the Perelman School of Medicine spoke about the mRNA vaccine technology developed by Drew Weissman and his colleagues at Penn. The method is currently being used to engineer a COVID-19 vaccine.

University of Pennsylvania program training dogs to sniff out spotted lanternfly eggs
Jennifer Essler, a postdoc in the School of Veterinary Medicine, spoke about a new program that trains dogs to detect the presence of spotted lanternfly eggs. “For the dogs, it’s a game, it’s like anything else. They don’t know that they are saving the planet in any way,” she said.

Beauty and the mask: People who wear face masks rated ‘far more attractive,’ study finds
David Sarwer of the Perelman School of Medicine spoke about research he helped conduct about perceptions of mask wearing. “For people who might self-conscious or concerned about how they look in a mask when they go in the public, we now have evidence that says, in reality, people are going to see you as more attractive,” he said.

Invisible Hands PHL offering free delivery of necessities to at-risk people who can’t leave home
College of Arts & Sciences rising senior Lexy Chavez co-founded a free delivery service that helps provide people at risk of contracting COVID-19 with groceries and other necessities. “I would want somebody doing this for my grandmother,” she said.

Christon Young, a charter school student from Camden, New Jersey, will be attending Penn this fall on a full scholarship. Young plans to become an anesthesiologist.

Penn Medicine’s Tara Miller Melanoma Cancer Center opens in memory of young woman who lost her battle
A new melanoma research center, named for the late Tara Miller, was dedicated this week at the Abramson Cancer Center. Lynn Schuchter of the Perelman School of Medicine said Miller was “a remarkable woman, incredibly courageous, such a love for life.”

3 cheers: The science of the Working Dog Center
Cindy Otto of the School of Veterinary Medicine discussed the Working Dog Center’s new Citizen Science Project, which allows members of the public to enroll their dogs in the Center’s scent-detection training program. “We thought, what a great collaboration: bring in dogs that have already been excited about doing nose work and see if they can’t help us answer some really important scientific questions,” she said.

Penn Vet unveils mobile clinic to serve community, area shelters
Penn Vet’s Shelter Medicine Program unveiled a 40-foot mobile clinic over the weekend. The unit will provide medical and clinical assessments for animals, along with facilities to perform surgeries. The unit will also be used for humane education programs.
