Research gets its own Web site
Everyone at Penn knows it; now it’s time to tell the rest of the world.
Research at Penn, an online compendium of research news from across the University, and its companion print publication are sounding the message that Penn is a “research powerhouse,” said Vice President for Communications Lori Doyle.
The intent is to showcase the breadth of the University’s research enterprise to a range of individuals—from potential investors to prospective researchers interested in the University—and to allow current researchers a chance to share their accomplishments.
The online database, which launched Sept. 4, houses more than 300 research stories dating back to April 2001.
While many of Penn’s 12 schools already have their own research sites, gathering research news onto one spot saves people the hassle of having “to poke around” on the Penn Web, said Deni Kasrel, manager of Web and publishing services in the Office of University Communications. The site also reinforces Penn’s stature as a research giant. “By centralizing the information it really drives home the breadth and scope of research being conducted throughout the various schools, centers, institutes and departments at Penn,” she said.
Articles on the Web and in the brochure are divided into five categories—health, natural science, technology, society and business—with stories in the print publication geared more towards a general audience. Individuals can stay on top of research breakthroughs by signing up for e-mail updates.
